Yes. It matters.
Does it matter where you choose to print your photos? YES. You have invested time and money in your photography session. I have worked hard to edit your images in an authentic and attractive way. Your printed photos should reflect all of that investment.
I printed the above photo in 8x10 through three different sources: CVS, a popular local photo lab and my professional lab. The prices ranged from $4 to $16. Let's walk through the differences.
From left to right:
1. CVS - Drugstores are known to add contrast and boost vibrance. That is true here. The chambray blue in her shorts is far too bright - pulling the eye away from her face. Also, the shadows on her face are quite strong creating an unattractive light balance. The paper is rather lightweight.
2. A popular local photo lab - The middle photo is overexposed and much warmer than my edit. The colors are much better overall. The paper is a professional grade.
3. My professional lab - The colors and contrast are consistent with my edit. The photo is mounted on 2mm styrene to preserve the image by preventing buckling, wrinkling, or tearing over time.
The $12 price difference between CVS and my lab is a minimal additional investment to preserve the memories we created together. The mid-range local lab was an improvement over the drugstore product but overexposed the print and lacked the extra protection the backing provides.
Ultimately, I want you to print your photos and will be glad that you have done it no matter where you choose. Don't let your photos live in the digital graveyard!
Warmest,
Lisa
